Valentine’s Day and the greatest gift of all.

What is the greatest gift of all? Why it’s love of course. Some might say that the greatest love is the love that a person has for a spouse or partner. Others might argue that it is the love that a parent has for a child. I think that Whitney Houston was right, the greatest love of all is the love that one has for oneself.

Think about it for a minute. If you don’t love yourself you are probably miserable. Since misery loves company, chances are you are making everyone around you miserable too. Now that you are surrounded by miserable people you can blame them for your bad feelings.  So not loving yourself can have a negative effect on people around you. Let’s start over. So there you are not loving yourself and probably dwelling on everything that is wrong in your life. You are in a hole so deep that you feel that there is no getting out. One step forward and two steps back, so not only are you going no where but you are actually going backwards. Soon you’re thinking there is no sense in trying. So, not loving yourself can cause you to give up on all of your hopes, dreams, desires and possibly your life.

OK, enough, I think you get the point. If you recognize this way of thinking and acting in yourself the good news is that just that recognition is a great first step. Nothing can change if you don’t have a clue that something needs to change. The next step of course is doing something about it.

There are a number of things you can do to help yourself, from positive self talk to talking to someone positive. Try different things to find what will be most helpful to you. Remember, as things change, your needs might change; so don’t be discouraged if the thing that was working for you today, does not work for you tomorrow. Here are some things to consider trying. Community support groups, live or on-line; self help books or audio tapes/Cd’s; life coaching;  therapy.

Happy Valentine’s day and remember to give yourself the greatest gift of all; Love.

    Hi Jeanne,
Another great post and piece of advice. I’m listening to your guest appearance on The Connect Show as I read it – nice job :)

It is so true that you can’t take care of anyone else or any THING else, in your life until you take care of yourself first….and make your own foundation strong.
